Sporting a history of 117 years, the annual Tour de France is held over 23 days in summer. It is one of the world's best-known sports events, comparable to the Olympics and the World Cup. Every year, 3.5 billion people watch elite cyclists battle it out in Le Tour on TV, and 10 million people from all over the world attend one or more stages of the event in person.
The gruelling race usually covers a distance of more than 3500 kilometers, divided into so-called étapes or stages, from one city to the next. The champion of the race is the rider who completes all stages in the shortest total time and he will wear the maillot jaune or yellow jersey. The best sprinter gets to wear a green jersey, the best climber will don the white and red polka-dotted jersey and there is a white-collared jersey for the best young rider.
The competition system of the Tour de France is divided into the original Tour de France, L'Étape by Tour de France and the Tour de France Criterium. In 2017, the L'Étape by Tour de France China series was introduced, landing for the first time in Shanghai. Since then, it has been held in Changsha, Beijing, Zhuji and Yunnan's beautiful Fuxian Lake.
Different from the pro race, where the world's top professional cyclists compete against eachother, the L'Étape by Tour de France challenge is an international competition for amateur cyclists around the world. It is fun and encourages participation from those of us who are not blessed with huge thighs of steel.
A typical track of the L'Étape by Tour de France challenge follows a 120 kilometer route that will be fully closed to traffic. Tour de France experts survey and design the route, incorporating cultural and historical highlights — just like in the original Tour de France, which always features beautiful drone video footage for those who are watching the Tour on TV. This has contributed to the Tour becoming a symbol of French culture and world cycling culture. Participating in or watching the Tour de France has become a pilgrimage for all cycling enthusiasts.
In recent years, the global competition system of the Tour de France has gradually changed. Now, cyclists can not only participate in the L'Étape by Tour de France in China, but also have a stab at joining the L'Étape du Tour de France. The top 20% of all the age groups will be eligible to participate in the L'Étape du Tour de France held in France, and both winners of men's and women's group can obtain the direct qualification for next year's Tour de France world championship.
Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefecture is tucked away in the northwest of Yunnan Province, close to Tibet and bordering on Myanmar. This remote area of Yunnan features snow-capped glaciers, waterfalls and lakes fed by mountain streams. It is a wondrous natural landscape, with the Nujiang Grand Canyon featuring as the jewel in the crown of natural splendor. The gorge runs from Biluo Snow Mountain and the precipice of the Gaoligong Mountains, with a total length of 316 kilometers. It is one of the most rugged and steep areas in the world, presenting a serious challenge to bicycle aficionados. This L'Étape by Tour de France Challenge allows cyclists to enjoy the magnificent mountain landscapes and colorful local minority cultures.
This year, the cycling challenge will see riders tackle these rugged valleys of the Nujiang River, starting in Lushui City and finishing in Weilaba Village. Apart from promoting cycling culture, the event and the accompanying media coverage will highlight the local culture and scenic spots of Nujiang Prefecture — the development of sports and leisure tourism industry is an important part of Yunnan provincial policy.
In order to ensure the difficulty of the race is no less than that of the Tour de France, experts have designed a route free of traffic, with three certified grade climbing points and sprint points.
The winner of the first Tour de France in 1903 was Maurice Garin. Why was he disqualified in 1904, missing out on his second yellow jersey?

The young rider classification is a secondary competition in the Tour de France, that started in 1975. Excluding the years 1989 to 1999, the leader of the young rider classification wears a white jersey (French:maillot blanc). The requirements to be eligible for the young rider classification have changed over the years but have always been such that experienced cyclists were not eligible, sometimes by excluding cyclists over a certain age, cyclists who had entered the Tour de France before, or cyclists who had been professional for more than two years. In the most recent years, only cyclists below 26 years are eligible.
History
From 1968 to 1975, there was a white jersey awarded in the Tour de France to the lead rider in the combination classification (best rider in the overall, points and climbing competitions). In 1975, this classification was removed, and replaced by the young rider classification. Any neo-professional (less than three years professional) competed in this classification, which was calculated using the rankings for the general classification.[1] The leader in the young rider classification wore a white jersey.
The rules for the young rider classification changed in 1983, when the competition was only open for first-time competitors, but in 1987 it became open for all cyclists less than 26 years of age at 1 January of the year following that tour.[2] From 1989-1999, the white jersey was no longer awarded, although the competition was still calculated. Since 2000, the white jersey has again been awarded, open for all cyclists less than 26 years of age at 1 January of the year following that Tour. In 1997, the name of the competition officially changed to 'Souvenir Fabio Casartelli'.[3] The optical retail chain Krys has sponsored the white jersey since 2015.[4]
Winners
Since the young rider classification was introduced in 1975, it has been won by 36 different cyclists. On four occasions a cyclist has won the young rider classification and the general classification— Fignon in 1983, Ullrich in 1997, Contador in 2007 and Schleck in 2010. The only cyclist to win the young rider classification and the mountains classification in the same year is Nairo Quintana in 2013. The only cyclists to win the young rider classification in multiple Tours are Marco Pantani (two wins), Ullrich (three wins— also finishing first or second in the general classification on all three of these occasions), Andy Schleck (three wins),[5] and Quintana (two wins— also finishing second in the general classification both years).
